Abstract

Artificial intelligence agents today largely lack the ability to truly reflect on their own knowledge andperceptions. Humans exhibit metacognition – the ability to think about and monitor one’s own thinkingprocesses 1– which enables us to recognize what we know versus what we are uncertain about, and toadjust our learning strategies accordingly. Inspired by this, we propose the Cube of Experience, aconceptual framework that gives AI a structured, multi-dimensional representation of its experiences andinternal states to facilitate self-reflection. The Cube of Experience defines a coordinate system with axesrepresenting key metacognitive qualities of any given memory or knowledge fragment: Tangibility, Belief, and Perceptibility, along with an associated Perception Vector for content. This framework allows an AIagent to place each experience as a point within a “cube” defined by these axes, making explicit the oftenimplicit properties of the agent’s knowledge.
